Lighting as an essential part of plant balance

Plant Empowerment is built on a science-based approach to sustainable and profitable growing by keeping the three plant balances — water, energy, and assimilates — in equilibrium. Lighting plays a crucial role in this process.

“Lighting is a hugely important factor in applying the Plant Empowerment principles, and LEDs offer an effective year-round solution for growers,” explains Stijn Jochems, representing the Plant Empowerment Foundation.

“It’s not only about choosing the right spectrum or intensity. Light must be seen in relation to climate control, screening, irrigation, and other greenhouse systems.”

A strong addition to a global knowledge network

Signify brings a global team of specialists who understand how LED lighting interacts with plant physiology and greenhouse climate — and who actively share their knowledge with growers around the world.

“Signify continuously conducts multidisciplinary research to develop data-driven lighting strategies tailored to plant needs. This aligns seamlessly with our Plant Empowerment philosophy.”

Supporting growers with integrated, data-driven strategies

“Good lighting is essential for year-round cultivation,” says Esther de Beer, Global Manager of the Philips LED Plant Specialist Team at Signify. “But optimal results only occur when all crop-related factors are in balance. That’s why collaboration and knowledge-sharing are so important — and why joining the Plant Empowerment network is such a natural fit.”

Jeroen Thijs, Marketing Manager at Philips Horticulture LED Solutions, highlights the shift towards intelligent LED lighting systems:

“With research-driven algorithms that dynamically respond to changing crop conditions, lighting is becoming more integrated than ever. By working with Plant Empowerment, we aim to help even more growers benefit from this holistic approach — increasing yield and quality while reducing costs.”

Strengthening the foundation for the future

With Signify’s arrival, the Plant Empowerment network now consists of 12 leading partners, representing every major aspect of high-tech greenhouse production — from seeds and climate control to irrigation, IPM, and now LED lighting.

“This broad expertise allows us to translate scientific insights into practical actions that help growers make tangible improvements,” says Jochems. “By putting the plant first, we can collectively drive better results.”

Bringing science closer to the greenhouse floor

This partnership supports our mission for the coming months: helping growers apply Plant Empowerment even more effectively in their daily operations.

“Topics such as plant health and resilience are becoming increasingly urgent,” Jochems concludes.

“We’re preparing for the next phase, in which we’ll work even more closely with growers in different regions so we can understand their real-world challenges faster, and help them turn theory into measurable results.”
