About the workshop

The Plant Empowerment philosophy, which takes the natural behavior and the growing power of plants as its starting point, helps growers worldwide to grow more sustainably and achieve higher yields. The principles revolve around cultivating greenhouse crops sustainably by supporting each plant’s natural balance. This unique data-driven way of thinking facilitates higher yields and better crop quality for growers while supporting more efficient use of valuable resources such as water, energy, and nutrients. As a result, the Plant Empowerment philosophy provides a roadmap to both profitable and environmentally friendly horticulture.

To help growers and other horticultural specialists understand the philosophy even better, Plant Empowerment started organizing live multi-day workshops in Canada last year. Because of the great success and positive feedback of the workshops of last year, we will continue organizing these workshops in the coming years.

This course will contain a combination of theoretical and practical sessions, alternately led by the Plant Empowerment partners and co-author (Peter van Weel) of the book on Plant Empowerment. Practical examples will be discussed in detail, for example, the approach of the BASF project, where the implementation team achieved 121 kg. Furthermore, the consults will share the latest updates on the Plant Empowerment principles.

Set-up program

March 28 – Basic course

The first day is dedicated to the basics of Plant Empowerment. After the opening and general introduction, the rest of the day is devoted to uniformity. For optimal results, uniformity is needed in the root zone, climate and data. Experts address this in detail during several courses. Topics discussed are:

• Climate: temperature, humidity, CO2, homogeneous climate
• Rootzone: Substrates, optimum dose size, drain, and dry back, big 6, minerals, microbiome
• Data: Weather stations, aspirator boxes, and plant sensors, bringing data alive, data-driven growing

The content program starts at 8.30 am and ends at 5:00 pm with drinks. There will be several Q&A rounds throughout the sessions. In addition, it is possible to ask 1-to-1 questions to the experts during the breaks.

March 29 and 30 – Advanced course

On days two and three, the advanced part of the course takes place. This part of the course consists largely of breakout sessions. The opening and closing sessions are plenary. Here we discuss real-time case studies, various Plant Empowerment users are featured, and there will be time for Q&A’s. In the program, there will be sufficient opportunity to ask the consultants questions directly or to ask them for personal advice.

Participants can follow several sessions over two days. After all, interest varies per grower, this depends on several factors such as the type of crop, the challenges in your greenhouse, and your growth ambitions. Therefore you can choose the program that suits you best.

We’ll contact you after registration to share your preferences. We will do our best to assign you to your preferred sessions. Some of the topics that will be covered are:

• Climate effects from HPS to LED
• Genetics
• Lessons learned on the energy crisis
• Screens, gaps, and air movement
• Supporting irrigation strategy with sensors
• From fertilizer schedule to healthy plants
• Specific topics per crop (strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc.)

Recordings

We will record most live sessions, which can be purchased separately at additional costs of €299 ex. VAT. By purchasing the recordings, you will get access to these sessions shortly after the live event, so you can follow the sessions afterward online at your own convenience. This offers you the opportunity to gain all knowledge shared during the live Canada course. No one has to miss anything.

Note: Last-chance ticket sales are necessary in order to plan the program as well as possible and to arrange everything properly. When booking before March 14, the chances are higher that you can participate in the course you sign up for.
