What is a fertilizer schedule?
A fertilizer schedule defines which nutrients are supplied to the crop, in what concentrations and in which ratios. But more importantly, it translates the nutritional requirements of the plant into a practical irrigation recipe.
As Plant Health Specialist Mark van der Werf explains: “By making a fertilizer schedule, we decide what kind of minerals, and in which ratios, we supply to the plant.” Those minerals, together with the sugars produced through photosynthesis, become the building blocks for growth, production and plant resilience. A fertilizer schedule is therefore not simply about adding fertilizers. It’s about supplying the plant with the right building materials.
It starts with the plant, not the fertilizer
One of the most common mistakes is to start with the fertilizer itself. Should I use calcium nitrate? Do I need more potassium? Which product performs best? Those questions are important, but they come later.
The first step is always understanding what the plant requires. Once the target nutrient concentrations are known, the grower can determine which fertilizers are needed to reach those values. In other words, fertilizers are the solution, not the starting point.
Why does water quality matter?
Before adding a single kilogram of fertilizer, it’s essential to understand the composition of the incoming water. Rainwater contains almost no minerals, while well water may already provide calcium, magnesium or bicarbonates. Those minerals become part of the final nutrient solution and directly influence the amount of fertilizer that still needs to be supplied.
This is why two growers producing the same crop can end up with completely different fertilizer schedules. The recipe doesn’t only depend on the crop. It also depends on the water entering the greenhouse.
Building a fertilizer schedule is like solving a Sudoku
Looking at a fertilizer schedule for the first time can be intimidating. Tables filled with nutrients, millimoles and calculations often make the process seem far more complicated than it actually is. Mark explains it differently: “Making a fertilizer schedule is nothing else than a Sudoku puzzle.”
You don’t begin with the nutrients that have several possible fertilizer sources. You start with the nutrients that only have one logical solution. Each calculation automatically determines part of the next one, gradually completing the entire schedule. Once you understand that principle, fertilizer schedules become much more logical.
Understanding gives you flexibility
Standard fertilizer recipes are an excellent starting point, but they are never universal. Water quality changes. Crops change. Varieties change. Growing strategies evolve.
